12th June 2017 Paul Andrews

Third generation family firm takes Thames Valley Family Business of the Year 2017.

Family Business United is delighted to announce that RH Amar, one of the UK’s leading importers and distributors of fine foods is the winner of the Thames Valley Family Business of the Year Award for 2017.

As Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United (‘FBU’) explains, "We were delighted to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses for the 2017 awards, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do.”

This is the second time that RH Amar have triumphed in the Family Business of the Year Awards having taken the same title last year.

“RH Amar was founded by the grandfather of the current Managing Director, Rob Amar, and the pioneering values that lead to the creation of the business have been continued through the generations to the present day where they are innovative and forward thinking.  As a business they were the first to market canned mushrooms, Caesar dressing and satay sauce in the UK!  Now, they work with more than 40 brands sourced from 70 suppliers across six continents and are one of the UK’s leading importers and distributors of fine foods.”

“The judges were impressed with the long term view that the business has taken since its inception, their response to changing market conditions, strong family values and growth underpinned by progressive policies to encourage staff performance and a successful transition to the third generation.”

“They represent a great British family firm based that truly deserve all the plaudits that winning this award brings."

Rob Amar, the third generation of the family to lead the family firm added, “I am delighted that our company has been recognised with this award, and to win for a second consecutive year is amazing.  Family businesses are at the heart of the UK economy and local communities.  As a third generation family business, we believe we are contributing to maintaining this important part of our fabric, while providing our colleagues a great place to work founded on strong values and a real purpose.”

Andy Cowie, Business Development Director of James Cowper Kreston who sponsored this category added,  “We were delighted to sponsor the Thames Valley Family Business of the Year Award which resulted in a great winner ambassador for the sector.  RH Amar is a great family firm in the region with a good heritage and a bright future.”

“Since their foundation in 1945 they have continued to grow into a leading importer and distributor of foods with strong family values as the heart of all they do.  Worthy winners, we look forward to hearing more great things from them in the generations to come."

The Family Business of the Year Awards are organised by FBU, the award-winning magazine and resource centre the champions and celebrates the family business sector.  Now in their fourth year, these awards recognise the diversity, strength and depth of family firms across the UK and seek to highlight the contribution that family firms make to the UK economy.
