Another family business gaining recognition for their endeavours

The UK’s leading independent food ingredients manufacturer, Macphie of Glenbervie has scooped the “Profiting Through Research” award at the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards 2012.

The company was presented with the award by television personality Hardeep Singh Kholi in recognition of its on-going collaborations with academic partners to introduce novel products and processes. Over the last two years Macphie has carried out 12 collaborative research projects with Scottish Universities aimed at addressing specific business challenges in product, packaging and manufacturing as well as longer term “blue-sky” research and development collaborations.

The “Profiting Through Research” category is a new addition to the event, sponsored by Interface Food & Drink.  Judge Helen Pratt of Interface Food & Drink said “Interface seeks to encourage a culture where the food industry realises that solutions to industry problems can be found at Scotland’s universities. Macphie is shining the light in the way that it has engaged with the universities and is an exemplar of what companies can achieve through innovation.”

Ashley Baker, Head of Research and Development at Macphie of Glenbervie said, “Innovation is at the heart of everything Macphie does, whether it is new product development, packaging, processing or services. We are delighted to receive this award, reflecting the broad range of external collaborative projects Macphie is undertaking as part of our Research and Development programme. A key part of Macphie’s innovation strategy is to access the world leading science and expertise of Scottish Universities and translate that into new technologies, made in Scotland, to create value for our business and customers.”

The awards ceremony took place at the Dunblane Hydro Hotel, with celebrity chef Nick Nairn taking up the role of head chef for the night, catering for the 400 guests. Dubbed the “Oscars” of the Scottish food and drink industry, recognises and rewards the very best of Scottish produce.

Macphie of Glenbervie is a family run business with over 80 years experience in creating innovative, premium food ingredients including cake and bread mixes, sauces and desserts. The company, based near Stonehaven has innovation at its core and supplies a UK and international customer base across 40 countries, comprising bakers, chefs, retailers and food manufacturers.
