Newhay continues to make hay!!
Award-winning Newhay was originally set up in 2004 and is a family-business, owned and managed by husband and wife team, Ian and Helen Burrows.
Ian was managing a 300-acre farm near Selby, North Yorkshire, when he was asked to supply a local trainer with haylage of a consistent quality to feed his race horses. With a background in agriculture and a long term passion for farming, Ian researched the market and recognised a gap for quality hay-based feeds.
Having achieved this, Newhay quickly gained a reputation for supplying the equestrian trade with essential feeds and specialist blends of ryegrass, oatstraw and Timothy Hay.
In a drive
to improve quality further, Ian turned his attention to processing and packing. Feedback from pet food
companies indicated that high levels of mould and dust were prevalent in hay products for many other animals as well as horses, particularly herbivores and small animals.
Using his knowledge of engineering, Ian created a unique manufacturing process for Newhay involving advanced drying technologies and dust extraction
This enabled the business to create a much faster production process, which removed moisture and retained a higher nutritional content, once the hay had been cut.
As a result, Newhay is now the leading grower and producer of specialist hay products in the UK, employing a team of seven and supplying a wide range of products for many well known, pet food manufacturers and retailers in the UK and Europe, such as; Burgess, Pets at Home and Wilkinson.
Recently Newhay's MD Ian Burrows also won the national "Diversification Farmer of The Year" Award from the Farmer's Weekly Publication - the Oscars of the farming world.
