Our family and furniture workshops have been rooted in Oxfordshire since 1895.
Now in its fourth generation Wesley-Barrell has grown a business based on a heritage of furniture making skills and craftsmanship. Today traditional upholstery skills continue to underpin the Wesley-Barrell approach to design and production which have created a range of classic English sofas and armchairs which like the company have been built to last.
In 1895 Anthony Barrell establishes a family business in Witney, Oxfordshire as Valentine and Barrell. A classic general store of the kind to found in any busy market town at the time.
It sells furniture and beds made in the family workshops alongside fashion and all manner of homewares.
1930 - 1960
Thomas Wesley-Barrell continued his father's bed making business under the name 'Wesley-Barrell' and established a mail order bedding firm.
The company moved to its present site at 3 Bridge Street, Witney.
1960 - 2005
Wesley's son Peter developed a comprehensive sofa range and moved the workshops to Charlbury. With his French wife Francoise they recognise the importance of bringing their sofa range to the customer and open a network of Wesley-Barrell showrooms throughout England.
Wesley-Barrell is now under the guardianship of the fourth generation of this family business. Juliette, Eugenie and Isabel Barrell recognise the importance that four generations of crafts skills bring to the design and making of both traditional and contemporary sofa styles. Isabel comments; 'the importance of where products are made is growing for our customer - they want to understand how they are made and what will make a sofa or chair comfortable and last...'
