About Thorncroft Clematis

We are a leading UK clematis specialist with over 25 years experience growing and selling high quality clematis to customers in the UK, Europe and worldwide.

We are proud to have gained an excellent reputation over the years, not only for the quality of the plants we sell and the high standard of service that we give our customers, but also for the development and innovation which are at the forefront of our business.

In 2014 we were awarded our eighth consecutive Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, adding to a vast array of medals and awards from other exhibitions and events including a major award in 1998 for our mail order service which we have continued to develop and improve. We hope you enjoy using our website and should you wish to give feedback please do so via our Contact Us page.

Our family-run nursery specialises in clematis. We grow the well-known cultivars, many of the new introductions from around the world, evergreen and herbaceous clematis as well as some of the less common species. We also offer many other climbers.

What began as a hobby, many years ago, has gradually grown into a business. Over those years, our passion and knowledge of clematis has also grown and with the help of my grandparents, Geoffrey and Dorothy Tolver, mum (Ruth) opened Thorncroft Clematis Nursery to the public in March, 1989.

I (Peter) am the owner/Director with my father Jon who has tried to retire staying on as a Director while mum now concentrates on being an author. During the main season my wife, Gill, and seasonal staff, Carol and Wendy, also help to prepare the plants and take your orders.

Whilst some clematis nurseries compete to have the longest list of cultivars in their catalogue, we prefer to list only those which are in general production on our nursery, rather than all the cultivars we hold in our collection. The cultivars we have listed in our catalogue and website have been selected for their special merits - e.g. length of flowering period, colour, form and quantity of blooms, strength of growth and generally because they are 'good doers' and worthy of space in anyone's garden.

Our nursery, like plants and gardens, continues to grow and develop. This website is intended to reflect this and will also be developed and updated regularly.
