About Hartleys Traditional Ice Cream
Ice Cream makers to the same recipe as all those years ago, with quality being the utmost priority. The ice cream is freshly made each day in the creamery, and sold from the creamery shop and the 6 mobile vans.
Hartleys Ice Cream is a long-established business, first started in the early 1930s. A gentleman founded it by the name of Grayson Hartley, who used to sell the Ice Cream from a motorbike and sidecar.
His son Billy Hartley then took over the business, and ran it successfully for over 40 years from the Creamery Shop at 24 Church Street, Egremont, introducing mobile vans in the local area.
Billy Hartley's sister and brother-in-law Hannah and Norman Caulfield then ran the business for a couple of years during the late 1970s, and they were later joined in partnership by Les Richardson in 1981.
In 1983, Les became sole proprietor. Les had worked in the business as a schoolboy and had strong ties with the Hartley family from an early age. Les's son Mark then joined the business in 1991 and worked alongside his father until Les retired in 2003.
Mark now runs the business supported by his wife Shirley, in the way it has successfully been run for over 70 years.
