About Daynes Music Company
Daynes Music is the oldest music company west of the Mississippi, and one of the oldest continuously run family businesses in America.
Daynes Music is the oldest music company west of the Mississippi, and one of the oldest continuously run family businesses in America. We started business in a log building in 1862. The building was located just east on first south in downtown Salt Lake City.
Brigham Young met the second wave of Pioneers at the grounds where the City and County building now stands. He found young Joseph Daynes playing a little Harmonium (organ). President Young exclaimed “this young man will be the Tabernacle organist.” Joseph was only 14 years old. He was sent to New York to study and returned home to become the first Tabernacle organist at the age of 16.
John Daynes, Joseph’s father, music lover and entrepreneur, founded our company in 1862. When not performing, Joseph helped his father at the store. Later, Royal W. Daynes, another of John’s sons, became the president. And after serving a mission for the Mormon Church in France, finishing his education at Stanford, and serving in World War II, Gerald Daynes, my father, took over the business in 1950. I became president in 1967.
Daynes Music began representing Steinway & Sons in 1873.
In today’s business environment, it is rare to find a company with enduring quality. Since 1862, our uncompromising standards have made us the piano dealer of choice – for both renowned concert artists and people who simply refuse to settle for less.
