About Edward Carter Funeral Directors
Abingdon’s longest established family owned and run funeral directors.
The history of the business goes back to the early 1950’s when Edward Carter became a highly respected funeral director in Oxford – first with Webber’s and then with Elliston and Cavell (now Debenhams).
Edward’s proudest moment was arranging and directing Sir Winston Churchill’s burial in Bladon. This event is still recognised in the offices with photographs of the practice-run and the letter of thanks from the Garter King of Arms, framed and proudly displayed.
A family business begins
At the end of the 1970’s, Debenham’s closed their funeral services so Edward decided to open his own business.
In 1984, Nigel Carter joined his father with the principles of commitment with compassion together with a keen eye to detail, helping the business to develop, mainly through word of mouth and recommendations.
Nigel is also the Pastor of Frilford Evangelical Chapel, and anyone who has been to one of the funeral services he has lead will know they meet at 5pm each Sunday.
Another generation joins
Paul now runs the business with his father Nigel, and is proud and privileged to be able to join the family business, to help so many families and to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.
