About Brown Cow Organics
An artisan organic food producer on Perridge Farm which consists of 480 acres of organic land situated on the South of the Mendip Hills.
Brown Cow Organics was conceived in the early 00’s as an artisan organic food producer on Perridge Farm which consists of four farms joined together; together they make up the 480 acres of organic land situated on the South of the Mendip Hills with wonderful views across the Vale of Avalon to Glastonbury Tor that is still the home of Brown Cow Organics today. Their Guernsey dairy cow herd are descendants of the herd established on Perridge farm in 1957. Judith Freane took over the dairy herd in the late 90's from her Father who had planned to sell Perridge farm at the time; since then Judith and her husband Clive through diversification and sustainability of their dairy farm and herd have grown the farm and Brown Cow Organics to their successful award winning organic food business that continues to develop year on year.
Award Winning Organic Beef
The diversification started with the introduction of their organic beef; from their born, raised and grazed on their Somerset organic certified farm - their Guernsey dairy herd males are raised right through to adulthood on their Pilton acres (home of Glastonbury Festival) to produce their multi award winning organic beef. Their organic beef is raved about by a whole host of industry peers and chefs such as Sheila Dillon from the Radio 4 Food Programme, Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and the Food Observer magazine.
Award Winning Live Organic Brown Cow Organics Yoghurt
The diversification continued with the introduction of Brown Cow Organics live organic yoghurt; stocked on top London store shelves within weeks of its initial production. Artisan made on their farm, Brown Cow Organics yoghurts are produced using only their own organic A2 beta casein protein rich whole milk from their born raised and grazed on their 480 farm organic acre Guernsey herd. A small team of dedicated local people hand make the yoghurt which is then hand poured into recyclable, re-usable pots. This artisan process produces naturally thick rich yoghurt without using emulsifiers, stabilisers or thickeners. The yoghurt is never homogenised or pumped as this would destroy its molecular makeup and natural creaminess.
Nutrition of the herd is paramount to Judith and Clive and the farm analyses the soil in every field and each crop grown, constantly monitoring the cows diet. Consequently, the yoghurt is nutritionally outstanding being rich in Omega 3s and other trace elements (it is very high in Zinc and Selenium.) Only natural and organic ingredients without artificial colours, additives or preservatives (plus GMO and Gluten free) go into the making of their award winning yoghurt.
River Cottage Partnership
On a visit to the farm, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall tasted the Brown Cow Organics yoghurts and very soon the River Cottage Live Organic fruit-on-the-bottom range of organic yoghurts was born - several years later the award winning River Cottage panna-cotta was introduced to the range – all made by Brown Cow Organics for River Cottage.
Hospitality Trade Yoghurts
In March 2012 Brown Cow Organics launched a 100ml size organic yoghurt range specifically for the Hospitality Industry. In screw top glass jars with tamper-proof labelling the yoghurts are perfect for breakfast service, room service, light desserts, afternoon teas and even as a mini bar snack. Produced using the same method as their retail yoghurt this luscious, sumptuous yoghurt became an instant hit with the hospitality trade.
Fashion and Interiors Cow Hide Range
Judith has also been quietly producing beautiful handbags, luggage and accessories from their Guernsey Cow Hides (a by-product of their beef) for the last couple of years, along with selling the unique hides themselves as rugs or wall hangings. In November 2011 Brown Cow launched a range of cow hide mule slippers too and began marketing the whole Cow Hide range as their Fashion & Interiors Collection. The Fashion & Interiors Collection is produced in Somerset and hand-fashioned from the selection of long or short haired hides in a variety of natural hide colours - ensuring each piece is as individual and unique as the animal they came from. Interior designers and home owners alike can purchase direct and select from the Brown Cow Interiors Collection in the knowledge that they are furnishing with British ethically produced goods that are from an exclusive collection - and when choosing hides for rugs or wall-hangings knowing each hide is totally unique.
Since 2001 Brown Cow Organics have won a staggering 35 awards for their farm, organic beef and dairy products, in September 2013 alone they were awarded four separate awards; A gold star Great Taste Award for their Dark Cherry Yoghurt, Organic Food Gold Award and Organic Food Award Category winner for their Natural Yoghurt, plus the first Good Dairy Award in the 2013 Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards by Compassion in World Farming; recognition indeed of their commitment to farm animal welfare. Notably In 2011 they won the Taste of Somerset Harmsworth Award for Outstanding Contribution to Food in Somerset - An award that recognises an individual or company that has put Somerset on the map with inspiration, energy, imagination and use of Somerset ingredients.
Judith & Clive Freane are passionate about the ethics, quality, providence and sustainability of ALL of the food produce and cow hide products that come from their organic farm; this can be clearly seen by the exceptional quality of their beef and yoghurts and the lustre of their hides; notwithstanding the incredible array of awards won across their produce. All of this achieved through the ever evolving healthy organic balanced diet and organic pastures grazed by their herd -the excellent produce is a true reflection of the high level of nutrition and animal welfare standards adopted by Brown Cow Organics; of which they are justifiably very proud.
