The Cox Family Enterprise Center (CFEC) at Kennesaw State University’s Coles College of Business is one of the oldest, continuously operating, University-based family business centers in the United States. With roots dating back to the early 1980s, the CFEC has dedicated their work to the education, recognition and research of family-owned businesses.
Today, the Cox Family Enterprise Center remains focused on connecting people, ideas, and knowledge by creating a dynamic learning community to transform family businesses for their long-term success, anywhere, anytime. Located on the campus of Kennesaw State University just north of Atlanta, Georgia, the CFEC serves family-owned business, professional advisors, students and academics from around the globe.
The Cox Family Enterprise Center started as a private enterprise initiative at the Coles College of Business. In 1987, the Center narrowed its focus to family-owned businesses and was named the Family Enterprise Center. It was not until the mid-1990s that the Center became the Cox Family Enterprise Center in honor of the generous support received from James (Jim) C. Kennedy, Chairman of Cox Enterprises, and The James M. Cox Foundation.
Since founding, we have become a world leader in family business research, innovative education, and community outreach. Understanding the importance of remaining educated on new and established industry best practices, each year, the center hosts various events and programs to not only teach owners and operators how to run successful family businesses all over the world, but also to expose the rest of the business community to its critical importance. All of which is backed by applicable scientific research and experience.
Our world-renowned faculty serves an international community of family business owners and operators, students, professional advisors and academic professionals. Our programming goes beyond the typical classes strictly offered to family businesses. In order to reach our vision of becoming the growth enhancing home of the family business ecosystem, we have created unique programming for each of the audiences we serve. This includes executive education, NxtGen programs, training for professional advisors, and research seminars for family business faculty. In fact, most of the research others cite was performed by, or in collaboration with, the Cox Family Enterprise Center. We continue to be the go-to place for the most up-to-date research and expertise on family businesses.
The Center’s signature educational programs are the Executive MBA for Families in Business, the Family Business Excellence Series, and the Professional Advisors Excellence Series. All of these provide working professionals with the concepts, tools and skills needed to run or advise a successful 21st century family business. We know that a good owner equals a good leader and that before there was a business, there was a family. Equipped with this knowledge, our programs are built to focus on developing great owners that can run successful businesses and lead harmonious families.
In addition to educational programs, the center also hosts events such as the annual Georgia Family Business of the Year Awards Program, which celebrates and emphasizes the vital contributions made by family firms in the state of Georgia. Each year, the Cox Family Enterprise Center hosts a dinner that honors Georgia-based family businesses that have earned the distinction through their successful business and family practices.
