Korev Sponsorship For Young Surfer
17th March 2017 Paul Andrews
Exciting young Devon surfer Lucy Campbell, 21, is set for a ‘breakthrough’ year, celebrating a vital new sponsorship deal with Korev Cornish lager.
The Korev partnership paves the way for her to reach more events around the globe to increase her status and ranking amongst the world’s best female surfers.
The local girl from Woolacombe in Devon has been surfing since the age of 10, following her father and brothers into the water and picking up a British Junior title at the age of 12 that kick-started a professional relationship with Billabong and saw her making serious inroads towards becoming the UK’s top female surfer. At 19 she was the British Women’s Champion as well as the UK Pro surf tour champion.
Although Lucy originally took part in junior World Surfing League (WSL) competitions when she was 17, she could never get to enough of the events to make a dent on the rankings.
2016 saw her first serious attempt at participating in the adult tour, during which she managed to complete the bare minimum of 5 events but still finished 13 in Europe and got a solid ranking on the World Qualifying series.
Delighted to be signing up to the three year deal to become a Korev Ambassador, Lucy commented: “Last year was definitely the toughest. Being unseeded I was always competing against the top girls in the contests and having to start from scratch. The rank I managed to achieve in 2016 will help this year but most of all the partnership with Korev means I can get to some of the higher scoring competitions in places like Mexico and El Salvador that will really make a difference to my career and my future.”
While Lucy will be seeing more of the world as she begins her quest to climb the world rankings and improve her chances for potential Olympic 2020 selection she is looking forward to taking part in Cornwall’s own series of major surfing events, including the Surface Pro event at Watergate in May, the Fistral Night Surf in June and Boardmasters in August.
Jeremy Mitchell, St Austell Brewery Marketing and Communications Director, said: “Korev is fast becoming synonymous with UK surfing through our sponsorship of major local events and the English Surfing Federation, and Lucy is a fantastic addition to Team Korev alongside our existing ambassador Luke Dillon. Both Lucy and Luke are highly talented youngsters with very real ambitions to reach the top in the sport and we hope that our sponsorship will help them to realise their goals.”
With surfing included in the Olympic sports line-up for the first time in 2020, Lucy is fully aware of the task that lies ahead of her if she is to realise her ambition of targeting a potential Team GB place: “There are some great girls out there on the tour at the moment. 2016 saw equal prize money at most events for women so I feel we are really beginning to be taken seriously as athletes and I’m looking forward to the challenges and competition ahead.”
As well as Korev Cornish Lager, Lucy is also sponsored by Olympus Cameras and Newquay based Adams Surfboards. As official beer of British surfing, Korev enjoys inclusion throughout English Surf Federation operations as well as being named as supporting sponsor of the Interclub and National Surfing Championships
Nick Rees, Operations Manager at the English Surfing Federation said of the new partnership: "It's brilliant to see Korev aligning with Lucy & supporting her surfing career; as an exciting & committed surfer we love seeing Lucy surf both at home & abroad. As one of our main sponsors, Korev’s support of Lucy is another example of their love for our sport & the people & organisations within it"
Korev – the Cornish word for Beer – was launched in Summer 2010 and has fast become one of the Brewery’s leading brands. It followed a wait of over 160 years for St Austell to produce its first premium quality Cornish lager. Korev is brewed to authentic methods over 25 days using only natural ingredients and has established a loyal following for it clean, crisp taste.
