Family Firm Leads Way On Mental Health

As part of GAP’s on-going commitment to employees and their wellbeing, GAP recently launched a Mental Health Awareness Initiative to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week 2018.

Mental health is a major factor in many people’s lives today directly or indirectly, at work and/or at home.

According to statistics, 526,000 workers in the UK Construction industry are suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety. Working days lost due to stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 49% of all working days lost due to ill health and 12.5 million days were lost due to work-related stress (2016/17 statistics).

GAP’s Head of HR Catriona Dunning said: “It is our responsibility as an employer to support employees with health matters including mental health issues. Following discussions at Board level it was agreed that as a business we should invest more time and money in mental health awareness and support mechanisms."

“Working in partnership with The Lighthouse Club, all members of GAP’s Senior Management Team will be attending mental health awareness sessions and it is anticipated that this training will be rolled out to all managers. We have also signed up to the Construction Industry Helpline which offers a confidential 24/7 helpline for all our employees which they can access free of charge."

“Posters promoting this initiative have been distributed to all 140 Group locations along with Helpline cards given to each of 1,700+ staff.”

 

GAP Hire Solutions has over 140 locations strategically placed across the UK, with 8 divisions offering a wide range of hire equipment and services. Traditionally known for plant & tool hire, GAP moved into hiring Non-Mechanical plant, such as fencing and barriers in 2009 and established their Lifting Hire & Sales division in 2011. In 2014, GAP diversified further and launched their Welfare Services, Event Services, Survey & Safety Hire and Vehicle Hire divisions to offer their customers a complete hire solution under the one GAP umbrella. 2015 saw the establishment of a new London Tools & Access division which was set up to deliver a bespoke service to customers within the M25 with fast collection and deliveries.
