Bringing the family business community together

Scottish Family Business Week 2016

17th August 2016 Paul Andrews

Recognising the need to champion this increasingly important sector of the economy, FBU Scotland is delighted to announce the dates for Scottish Family Business Week 2016.

Family firms are at the very heart of the Scottish economy and contribute greatly in terms of employment, income and community support.

Events are taking place in Glasgow and Edinburgh during the week of October 3-7 to really help put the family business sector on the map, identify ways to deal with some of the unique issues facing family firms such as succession planning, engaging the next generation and professionalising the family firm.

Tom Craig, Chairman of FBU Scotland is delighted with the range of events on offer, adding “these events are a great way for family business owners to come together, hear from each other, discuss, debate and network and as we see at other family business events, we are expecting a few moments when owners realise that they are not alone and help is at hand to deal with the issues that they felt were unique to their own family firm.”

“Family business leaders often tell us how lonely it can be running the business and dealing with how to  prepare for the future and the flagship conference taking place in Glasgow on October 6 is a perfect place to hear from fellow family businesses such as Anderson Maguire, Mactaggart and Mickel and John Watson who recently sold his family business.  Each business owner will provide personal insights into their journey and the decisions they made along the way and this provides real value and practical insight for the audience,” continues Tom.

Recognising the importance of family firms in Scotland, Paul Wheelhouse MSP and Minister for Business Innovation and Energy will be delivering the welcome address, a clear indication of how the future of Scotland and the role of family firms are intrinsically linked. There will also be interactive workshops governance, family firms in the digital age and growing the family business.

Elsewhere during the week long schedule of activities, there will be a pre-conference dinner in Glasgow to bring the community together and a further event in Edinburgh to visit award-winning family firm Macsween of Edinburgh, to get a look behind the scenes and to hear from Managing Director, James Macsween.

Much more is planned to raise the profile of family firms during the week and all of the activities can be followed on social media using the hashtag #SFBW2016.

As Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of FBU Scotland concludes, “This is a really diverse and vibrant sector in Scotland although the unique challenges facing families in business transcends these sectors.  These events are rich in knowledge, insight and value and we are really looking forward to some inspirational moments from some truly great Scottish families in business.”

“Statistics show the likelihood of future generations being involved in a family business decreases with each generational layer but this can be avoided by careful succession planning, open and honest communication and dealing professionally with the challenges that lie ahead.  Scottish family firms have been around for generations and we look forward to meeting lots of them during the events of Scottish Family Business Week 2016.”
